I chose artwork from Japan from the  Tokugawa period.  I feel that these works of art are very beautiful. Japanese art is, in my opinion, the prettiest and most minimalistic art style. Japanese art influenced many peaceful European artists such as Monet and Van Gogh; what I like about Japanese art is it is usually not serious and demoralizing like most artwork from this time period. The Tokugawa period was from 1603-1867 and their art was directed toward decorating paintings that represent a blossoming native culture. A style of art during this time is called Ukiyo-e which just means floating world, and all of the work I chose was from this time period and with that style. I love how these all have the  same theme but are all very different.  The Great Wave One of Japan's most famous artists is Hokusai, he has changed many things about himself throughout his lifetime. Hokusai changed his name multiple times and his art style; he stated on multiple occasions that he doesn't bel

The Vietnam War started in 1955 and ended in 1975, it was a long and costly war; over three million people were killed in this, half of which were Vietnamese civilians. This war divided the Americans, and in 1973 President Nixon called for a withdrawal of US forces. The art work from this time reflects the terrible times these people had to go through.  Q. And babies? A. And babies?                              American People Series #20: Die 1967   The first artwork has many artists incorporated into it.  Frazer Dougherty, Jon Hendricks, and Irving Petlin were in a group called Art Workers' Coalition(AWC); these group members exposed the atrocities  committed  by U.S. soldiers. They were the ones who designed the " Q. And babies? A. And babies?" poster, the person who took the picture is Ron Haeberle. The back story behind this poster came from a soldier who actually took part in the terrible act, Paul Meadlo.  The second picture here was also put together by the AWC, b

During the Great Depression the most common type of artwork is realism, this era was full of pain and suffering. The Great Depression caused the stock markets value to drop 60% and the family incomes dropped by 40%. Due to this economic crisis people expressed the despair, cruelty, and harsh conditions in their artwork.  Departure of the Joads from the Grapes of Wrath , Thomas Benton  In this painting is a family loading up and getting in their decrepit car to take them from Oklahoma to California. This was painted in 1939 at the end of The Great Depression. Colors do so much for paintings; they add texture, show depth, fullness, etc. This painting shows all of those elements. This is a realism painting; this shows the harsh times during this time. A father has to load his large family into a car that may not make it all the way to California for a job opportunity; times were very tough during The Great Depression and people had to make due with what they could at the time to survive.

Realism vs Impressionism   For this blog I decided to compare impressionism to realism. Impressionism was created from realism, therefore the works of art from both have quite a few similarities. Impressionists painted art that captures the scenes from the world around them as realistic as possible, this is also what realism does. The main difference between the two is that while they both capture realistic scenes, impressionists focus on a more pleasurable aspect; realists paint exactly what they saw. I prefer realism over impressionism because I like how raw and deep realism art can be.  Impressionism Impression Sunrise - Claude Monet This was created in 1872 while visiting family in Le Havre, it is a painting of port there in Le Havre. This painting has a fantastic depiction of how colors show depth. The colors of the boats further out in the water almost blend in with the clouds and water to show it is further away while the boats that are closer are darker and more distinct. This

The Classical Era was from approximately 1730 to1820; during this time there were many artworks created, difficulties, revolutions, inventions made, and scientific discoveries. The major scientific discoveries were mathematics and physics. In this time there were obviously no cameras, so artwork played a significant role in displaying the scientific discoveries. Artists recreating t hese important events allows us the opportunity to see what the times looked like. The Classical Era art is known for  symmetry, decorum, pellucidity, harmony and idealism. The three pieces of artwork I chose that represent this era and scientific discovery are below.  Benjamin Franklin Drawing Electricity from the Sky by Benjamin West One scientific discovery that could be argues as one of the most important discoveries of all time is electricity. Benjamin Franklin used a kite during a storm to relate lightning to sparks of energy, he knew that lightning was a form of flowing energy, and he proved that.  T

The Rainbow Landscape is a magnificent piece of art painted by Peter Paul Ruben in 1636. When searching for artwork for this assignment I found this and immediately decided that is the one I need to write about. I love how detailed it is, and how he managed to make the painting so realistic. He created the painting so you can see the textures of the objects without seeing the defined lines in it. The trees look large and full, you can see the faces of the people, the intense sky, etc. Oil paintings typically do not have this much detail put into them, but I am in awe of the amount he put in.  Not only do the details amaze me, but the colors in the artwork do as well. I believe Ruben used an immense amount of shading with similar colors to give off an autumn type of style to this piece. The amount of yellows, browns, and greens being used makes the sky and rainbow pop. I would definitely own this artwork and hang it in my house, I love artwork that is subtle and beautiful but has m

Italian Renaissance: Venus of Urbino

Italian Renaissance: Venus of Urbino  Previous to this assignment I had never heard of Titian, but after looking at his work I am in awe. He has some extremely beautiful work, but the Venus of Urbino is my favorite. The painting has extreme detail and color; you can tell he was an amazing artist by the way he shows off her curves against a dark wall, the flowers in her hand, etc. I see this painting as a confident woman who is proud of her body. Nowadays we are so quick to judge people on their bodies and body shame women, and the confidence I see in is the is the reason I chose the Venus of Urbino. With everyone demonstrating what they see as perfect on social media, it has created an increase in women's insecurities. I would love to see every woman have the confidence this beautiful woman has.  The Venus of Urbino was created in 1538 on an oil canvas in  Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence. This painting is not only about the confidence she has, but it shows passion; her rosy cheek
